I would think the more common story is like the one my younger brother, a musician, told me. They were playing in Reno, when their singer/frontman picked up their check and decided he could increase it at the blackjack tables, as he'd been winning lately. He proceeded to lose the entire band's pay for the previous two weeks. Needless to say, he lost the power of the purse that day!

gpowell, RE: "I think your talking about FedEx. The story, as told by Fred Smith, is that he couldn't make payroll until he won almost $29,000 at a Las Vegas blackjack table during a stop over. One time event. "

FedEx wasn't the company.

It's a younger hightech firm. And his trips to the casino were bi-monthly, repeatedly until he got kicked out.

Regards,
Amy J

My favorite Fedex story (and I don't know if it is true) was that the concept for the company was presented by the founder while in business school. It was returned to him with a failing grade with the note that his idea for a business had to be "feasible".
