The US really needs to set up a well organized trade school system that parallels the college system. Perhaps JJ can comment on how Germany handles this issue.

The trade school system is possibly the best part of public education efforts in Germany. Each week apprentices work for four days and attend a trade school for one day. School classes are closely related to the apprenticeship. Apparently this model leads to a comparatively high qualification of workers.

Most other German education areas are more or less troubled. It starts with hardly any daycare offers for toddlers (0-3) which makes it difficult to reconcile job and family. School efficiency has dropped badly as shown by the OECD PISA study. pisa.oecd.org Universities are only average internationally. Most research areas are dominated by Anglo-Saxon researchers and scientific journals. Chancellor Schröder has just launched an effort to found some elite universities - while at the same time federal states are reducing university budgets.

I don't know what you mean. There are schools teaching every conceivable craft and trade all over the country.

I wholeheartedly agree, and I think I've stumped on this before. <g>

The "VoTech" schools we have are often little more than places to stick the unwanted kids. A sort of goof off's high school with reputation to match. We can do better than that, and should. Not everyone can or should go to college or even want to go to college. We still need the trades, and an electrician gets paid a helluva lot more than a cashier at McDonalds.

Germany has a much better system, IMO.
