She lives with her parents but has to keep a car because she needs a means of transportation." Yes. She absolutely should be putting 12k into her 401k account. This would reduce her taxes to essentially nothing. If I were her, I would rent a bedroom in a house for $500/mo (maybe help an older lady to bring the rent down to $300/mo in exchange for meals & board), pay $150/mo in health care, and use $300/mo for food. I would get rid of the car and use the money for school. I would use the remaining $50/mo for applying to schools and scholarships, and for bus rides to various schools so she gets hooked up with a school advisor who sees how motivated she is. I would announce this decision to all my friends and family and hope to get clothes and maybe textbooks as birthday gifts. If not, I'd shop at Goodwill for inexpensive clothes. While I was in college, I made less money (even when corrected for inflation) than her from a full-time job as a software engineer at this ultra low-paying local company that was taking advantage of the recession - which was fine by me, because it gave me experience. It certainly wasn't easy, because I was also in school and had those bills to pay. Unlike her, I didn't live with my parents, nor did I buy a car. I invested everything into school or savings for more school, and worked three concurrent jobs at all other times while attending school. Then I went to grad school. And I eventually landed an excellent job at Microsoft. But I do know what it's like to lose a bit too much weight because you're working around the clock, saving money for school and probably not spending enough money on food as a result. Regards, Amy J
