The Taliban probably never wuld have ousted the Russians, if Carter hadn't ordered the CIA to help them with tactics and supplied weapons, especially Stinger missiles.

That's impossible.......the Taliban didn't come into power until the early 90s, maybe the late 80s.

You will notice, in your opening statement, you said the Just like the Taliban's tactics were a losing proposition against Russia; If you want to get technical, the Taliban didn't have anything to do with driving the Russians out of Afghanistn. as the later day Taliban weren't formed until 1994, according to your article; 5 yrs, after Russia withdrew from Afghanistan. Mullah Omar however, was a commander in several of the main groups, along with OBL and the Norther Alliance, and several others, which combined to drive the Russians out. It is these groups I assumed you were talking about. These groups got help originally from Carter, and the help continued through the Reagon, and half of Bush seniors administration.

khyber.org;

Forget that once again you are making attempts to dilute my point.

Clearly, things have gotten all mucked up. First and foremost, you are right.....technically, the Taliban did not kick the Russians out.......I was using the term Taliban loosely because I was too lazy to look up the spelling of the Mujahideen who, in fact, were the mullahs that preceded the Taliban and actually were the ones who kicked out the Russians.

And while we are at it, the real aid to the Mujahideen came under Reagan, not Carter. Russians didn't invade Afghanistan until the end of the Carter administration in 1979. Carter did sign off on some secret aid but it was Reagan who provided the greatest assistance.

However, my point still remains.......which is that the little guy can be surprisingly adept at beating a more powerful adversary on his home turf. While our aid to the mullahs was helpful, the reason the mullahs won is because they knew how to fight on their home turf and psychology was on their side.......they were fighting for their homeland.

We may have all the good intentions in the world but we are still foreigners fighting in a foreign country. In the end, we could lose this one just like we lost Vietnam and the Russians lost Afghanistan. Time will tell..........but then you knew all that.

The reality is that this is a p*ssing contest for you instead of a discussion with an exchange of info.!
