"if that thesis is irrelevant to today's practical methodologies, whatever the discipline, then it is a waste of time imho. The independent research skills might be worthwhile in a general sense but the time spent on the thesis itself, more often than not, cannot be applied directly in one's profession."

It apparently depends on the "profession" you have in
mind. For "corporate" crooks in marketing, advertising,
or "business administration", you usually don't need a
Ph.D - it will cloud your ability to stretch the truth...
In many other specialities in silicon (or other) industry,
the research and communication skills (dependent or
"independent") acquired during thesis preparation and
public defense are completely transferable over the
whole life, be it in pure research, or in applications,
or even when switching between different fields.

re:" There aren't too many corporate opportunities for PhDs that I know of in Silicon Valley. "

You couldn't be more wrong...... PhD's in chemistry, physics, material's science, EE, are greatly sought after in the semiconductor business....and they don't have to be specialists in silicon technology when they graduate..The demand, of course, depends on whether businesses are hiring....... It doesn't take too long for a person in these disciplines to get up to speed in silicon technology.
