Until this yr the word 'caucus' was just a term that I realized was connected to politics in some way. Iowa was really a learning experience for me. The caucus system seems to have originated in the type of rural area you described. I'm curious why those particular states didn't just direct voters to show up at the local post office to cast their primary vote. The discussion between voters is an interesting aspect although it might turn off some voters and many others probably look forward to a social evening out with the community. I saw the coffee & cookies served at some Iowa caucuses which was a surprise for me since our polling places are usually very impersonal....all business. Do you know what the average voter turnout is in your state? 50% or less has become the national average. I'm wondering if a national caucus system might encourage more people to vote. I doubt it though since so many citizens won't even take the few min required without a caucus.
