The media doesn't have time to focus on statesmen. In the era of the sound bite the demagogue with a newsy bit is more important than the visionary who simply has TOO DARNED MUCH TO SAY. And since people refuse to read and think. that presents a problem also. They'd rather feel, and believe, and be irrational- a large obstacle.

They were probably intimidated by Bush Administration's insistence that anyone who opposed or criticized his actions in any way were not patriotic, not to mention aiding terrorists (or something).
