Investors interpreted governor Ben Bernanke's remarks as a sign the Fed is closer to raising its target interest rate. Even more worrying for bond bulls obsessing over today's January payrolls report, Mr. Bernanke said he was "pretty confident" the United States would soon see big numbers on employment. A rate increase by the Fed would diminish the yield advantage that Canadian debt securities have relative to the United States, and that prospect led international investors yesterday to sell Canadian bonds and the dollar. Moving opposite to prices, the two-year Canada bond's yield rose three basis points to 2.64 per cent, the 10-year gained three points to 4.58 per cent but the 30-year held at 5.18 per cent. (A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.) In the U.S. market, the 10-year note's yield added five points to 4.17 per cent, while the two-year jumped eight points to 1.84 per cent, and the long bond added four points to 4.99 per cent.
