But if God is without a god above him, isn't God's existence ultimately sad and meaningless too?

HE probably spends his time observing we humans and saying to himself " What hath GOD wrought".

Well of course this all depends upon the god you have in mind. Knowledge and Power are necessarily key here. If the god you are considering is only the greatest person we can imagine and yet he must leave some aspect of existence (even if inanimate) outside of his purview, then yes-- his existence is as meaningless as ours. But if this God encompasses everything, then quite obviously there is no knowledge, power and therefore no meaning He lacks. In other words, nothing lies outside of Him at all. All quantities are resolved in Him. He Is quite literally Meaning Itself.
