That's a very good point about the historical context of religious text! If nothing else 9/11 illustrated that Islam and Christianity were headed on a very violent collision course.

We had a clear choice between accepting that fate through containment or changing the rules of that conflict into the rules of tension, an aggressive and unorthodox tensioning of cultures that increasingly more people view as necessary if an inherently rigid Islam -- the Koran has survived in its present decontextualized form for centuries -- and a more flexible Christianity -- post-Crusades -- are to adapt their religions with the times and integrate with less friction with the rest of the world.

So far we have forced OBL/Al Qaeda to run for their lives in this world and the next. We have rooted out the cash-rich regime of Saddam Hussein, the primary champion of the most perverse form of secular pan-Arab nationalism. By taking these twin decisive moves after the twin towers were destroyed we have forced other autocrats in Libya, Syria, Iran and even North Korea to scramble to at least buy time while they decide for themselves what the aftershocks of this preemptive war, a most unorthodox form of warfare, mean for them considering the kind of structural majority that is emerging in this country -- regular churchgoers tend to vote GOP on a 2 to 1 basis -- to anchor this coalition.

Yet despite all that progress we still have people who continue to insist that containment coulda' worked with Communism and woulda' work with radical Islam if we give peace a chance because war is.....<sniff>.......stupid. In this day and age, the mere perception of that kind of passivity or weakness is even more provocative than the belligerence that the spent former empires in Europe like to project towards us.

Pray tell, when has America ever been content to just take the road most travelled by?
