Kerry grew up with the Kennedy and Forbes clans. There are photos of him yachting with the Kennedys. Went to private schools in Switzerland and here.

I know foreign service officers and other government employees whose kids went to expensive, Ivy League universities. They aren't exactly living in mud huts. In fact, those two-year assignment overseas with many expenses paid and personal servants can be really a pretty comfortable existence.
