I found the discussion regarding tax receipts for self employed compared to those that classify themselves as self employed to be very enlightening.

Also:

Two-thirds of the jobs growth was in retail sales.

Jobs - I can tell you what I see in Michigan in the
auto industry - for engineering and computer workers.

There were dozens of new hires in our larger dept. in 2002.

There have been waves of layoffs in the white-collar sector here in both Summer 2003, and again 2 weeks ago January 2004. There have been ZERO new engineers or programmers added since 2002 here.

Also - I know people personally with experience that were let go last Summer 2003 - still looking for employment. These are good, highly skilled people making 50-70K on salary. There are NO jobs for these people here, period.

They have dropped off the unemployment rolls, so are not even counted as unemployed in the statistics.
