McCarthy was a quasi fascist. The KGB admitted they had some communist spies in our country. Big deal.
McCarthy wasn't right. He wasn't after real spies he was after people whose culture he didn't like. He persecuted everyone in show business including classical conductors and little old men and ladies.

He went after anyone who had ever attended a meeting or read a book about socialism. He was for censorship, mass paranoia and book-burning. McCarthy was the Anne Coulter of his day, spinning a big ugly lie that half the country are traitors who ought to be spied on and locked up in intern camps and/or blackisted from employment.

You saw a little of that last year with the "boycott France" movement. Now we know France was actually right and Bush was wrong. So now what do we do, boycott Bushies? refuse to buy oil? Intolerance and extremism breeds monsters. McCarthy was a true monster. In the name of fighting communism he tried to turn our country into a right-wing police state. But for moderate Republicans like Bush's grandfather, McCarthy might have succeeded. The GOP ought to be ashamed that their people are now defending McCarthy.
