"have you ever seen Kerry go up against a powerful special interest?"

I have a hard time coming up with a politician who has gone up against a powerful special interest. If you look at recent presidents ... Bush II, Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, I don't think it can be said that any of them went up against powerful special interests.

I guess you can point to a guy like Wellstone or McCain, but there aren't many of them.

Yes, Kerry goes up against the oil companies, polluters, hardliner rightwing chickenhawks, auto companies, bleeding heart liberals, HMO's, big Pharmas, defense contractors, Iran-Contra, BCCI Bank, the CIA vs. the DEA, all kind of huge special interests, who happen to be running things now to a latrge degree.
