In the early 60's we were winning in Vietnam. Under Kennedy with Green Berets leading Montagnards and other local tribes. The problem came when Johnson industrialized and Americanized the war, bringing in whole cities (built by Halliburton's Brown + Root and Bectel same as now), hundreds of thousands of drafted men and feeding the pigs at the public troughs. The forces which profited off Vietnam were much of the problem. Also the forces which lied to us about it, including Johnson.

Nixon went on to enlarge the war, then was forced to end it in his second term, forced to by public outcry and protests by prominent leaders like John Kerry. Unlike 60's radicals, Kerry had the right to protest. He was a hero, never a radical, and he had earned the right to protest. Nixon was very struck by Kerry and feared him. See the Watergate Nixon tapes.
