My understanding is that a finding of AWOL necessarily means a criminal conviction, which then brings a dishonorable discharge.

Without both an AWOL charge and conviction, there's no AWOL.

No charges were ever brought, much less a conviction. In fact, he was honorably discharged.

Bush's honorable discharge couldn't have been given with an AWOL conviction.

If your military justice sources tell you otherwise, let me know.
