I am ACATing my account (ALL) to Scotrade .... I have not found another discount broker to match their fees, services and what I have researched. Under the weather pretty bad so bear with my posts please. But holdijng cash of sells till clear is holding your money hostage and then the sell pitch crock on opening a margin account. Total nonsense. BTW only found Ameritrade & Etrade that do this little scenario. Gary Swancey and you can if you want to tell Scotrade my name because I have had at lenght discussion with several of them and have made notes on thus scenario.

I applied for and recieved the margin account so that I could go ahead and continue to trade during the 3-5 day period that previous sells are being settled. So I sold some stock and bought new stuff on the margin a couple of days ago. Even though I know I have in excess of 26K cash in my account the balances show only 3k in equity the cash and margin balances are negative and if I try to trade I get the error message that I don't have enough money in my account to buy stock. I have less than 26K in securities on my portfolio so its very confusing. I thought I would have the ability to own 26K in securities in my portfolio, with the additional opportunity to borrow from that and buy another 13K worth of margined securities. I just sent them a message complaining that the new system is scary and wacco.
