I think one of the reasons for Bush's Iraqi war was so he could continue in the "wartime President", Commander in Chief role. Let's face it, prior to 9/11, Bush was a looking seriously lame as Prez. Karl and Bush noted how his approval skyrocketed as we (almost) all approved of his pursuing Osama into Afghanistan. Perhaps they thought he could just keep a perpetual war going through the next election, and we'd all be too dumb to notice that the warmongers were the Bushies.
