I think its way offbase to equate as moral equivalents the present government of Afghanistan and the Soviet puppets who ruled Kabul.

Actually the comparison is an interesting one, and the fate of the Soviet puppets is something we need to consider. It is easy to assume that the populace rose against them because they were horrible communists, but the truth is a little more disturbing than that. The resistance to the communist governments came about principally because they undercut the traditional lock that the Islamic clergy had on governance of social policies, producing considerable and very controversial liberalization, and because they tried to undermine the power of the provincial warlords. The government we support is trying to do the same two things.

It will be interesting to see if they succeed.

The Loya Jirga knew what it was expected to do, and did it. There were, of course, private agendas aplenty behind the scenes, and there still are. That show isn’t over yet, not by a long shot.
