That's true, minus the harshness of "conspiracy". The only question? Is it a conspiracy, or a necessary evil?

It can't be debated. Using it as tongue-in-cheek, in context of "Well Known", is smoke and mirror.

Pharmaceutical industries take money from the poor and naive and recycle it to employees, workers in a MYRIAD of associated industries (including those shipping companies that specialize in
U.S. <--------> Canada, apparently), and insightful investors who have the resources to take advantage of the poor and naive.

The question is ages old.... how do you drive innovation without 95% margins, given the unquestionable need (IMO, and I know that there are many who do not agree) for intense regulation?

I come from a different focus. I'm Earth-oriented, and resent the effects of an expanding, resource-raping population. I fear the effects of medicines that are largely becoming part of the fix.

I've therefore tried to picture a better "fix", something that would be good for everyone. Here's my solution......

Hawaii splits. They become an independent country, Hawaii. Government-sponsored, non-profit research institutes are established near primo surfing and diving locations. The institutes are devoted to Excellence in Medicine Development, and serve lotsa guava juice and micro brews in the state-subsidized canteen. Faculties convene at Interlochen or Reykjavik in August, San Paolo or Auckland in March, and Bern or Vail in December.

Competitive faculty positions are renewable every three years.

Presto! Cheap, good medicines.
