China's Ministry of Agriculture confirmed on Thursday night that a previously suspected outbreak of the H5n1 strain of bird flu had occurred in eastern Anhui and Jiangxi provinces. Also reported were new suspected cases in Jiangxi, Yunnan and Guangdong provinces. The State Administration for Industry and Commerce on Friday said that preventing and controlling the bird flu epidemic has become the top priority of the government. Director of the Administration, Wang Zhongfu said that painstaking efforts would be made to guarantee that markets would not become channels of the bird flu virus. Wang said that Administrations for Industry and Commerce will soon begin a thorough check to clear out any possibilities of virus contraction and carry out 24-hour monitoring on the latest development of the epidemic. Authorities in the affected areas will strengthen measures to stop poultry from going outside and any unlawful fowl trade.
