Statement from John Kerry on Bush’s Economic Report

February 09, 2004

For Immediate Release

“How can we trust President Bush to create 2.6 million jobs when he has the worst record since Herbert Hoover when it comes to the nation's economy? Since President Bush took office, the nation has lost 3 million jobs, the worst of the last 11 Presidents combined. The President’s answer to the staggering economy is more tax cuts for the rich and an ‘on your own’ message for average American families. Last year, the Bush Administration promised Americans they would create 5.5 million jobs by the end of 2004. With their rate of return, this administration would be considered a bad investment.

"Photo-op after photo-op, the President continues to claim that the economy is improving. But, Mr. President, who is the economy improving for? It's more empty promises and false hope for middle class families.
“These empty promises don't help the 375,000 Americans who just in the last month exhausted unemployment benefits but still can't find a job. It doesn’t help the more than two million of Americans who have lost manufacturing jobs while this President gives corporate breaks to companies that move jobs abroad and it doesn't help the thousands of teachers, fire fighters and cops who have been laid off because of George W. Bush’s misplaced budget priorities. Under George W. Bush, families are paying more for health care and housing, while their wages are stagnating. More families are depleting their savings and filing for bankruptcy.

“President Bush needs to abandon his irresponsible plan to make the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans permanent and instead adopt a plan that will create new and better jobs and get our economy moving again.

“As President, I will roll back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest, and use the money to invest in health care and the education of our children. I will also offer incentives to reward good companies all across America that create new jobs and keep good jobs here at home.”
