The French also have huge noocular generation. Having the price of oil high is good for nuclear power generators as it means oil-fired stations can't undercut them. There's so much coal and gas that maybe it's not such a big deal - but it all helps. Maybe France doesn't have coal and gas available in quantity [I forget]. Oil is less linked to power generation these days and more to transport.

If oil was a free market, with Iraqi and Russian oil production running properly and at capacity, the price of oil would be nearer $5 than $30.

BP, Shell, Exxon and others would feel ill if they thought oil prices were going that low. Digging around in the Arctic and most other places would be silly when Iraqi oil is producing as it should.
