the republicans are collapsing at the moment. Bush can't win with these poll numbers that is why he is out making speeches about how great things will be (according to his advisors who have been wrong for 3 years running). Seriously a candidate cannot win in a dead heat with a challenger if he has 44% negative ratings. Just standard politics. Now if Bush had 65% favorables and 44% unfavorables he could win. But not with half the country really hating him. Notice the democratic primaries are record turnout? Moderates too.
