Aristotle makes the excellent point that we learn to be virtuous as we grow up, and that it is easier and more reliable for virtue to be second nature than to have to try to control yourself as an adult. Plato makes the point that only a person of stable character can reliably question mores, so as not to lose his bearings as he thinks matters through. We should respect the role of tradition in the establishment of a good society, even if reform is also warranted from time to time.......
