U.S. sees highest corn price in 6 years
Reuters, 02.10.04, 8:37 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. corn prices are headed for the highest farm-gate price in six years, $2.45 a bushel, propelled by large exports and strong demand at home for livestock feed and raw material for ethanol plants, the government said on Tuesday.

As a result, the Agriculture Department said the corn stockpile would shrink to 901 million bushels, the smallest since 1997, before the new crop is ready for harvest. USDA raised its forecast for U.S. corn and wheat exports by 25 million bushels each for this marketing year, to 1.15 billion bushels for wheat and 2 billion bushels for corn.
