..isolate the marriage variable--kids growing up with their own two married parents vs. kids growing up with their own two parents who present themselves as married but actually aren't. The study does not isolate the value of a civil marriage certificate.
Perhaps you or someone else would like to speculate on that particular variable since that's the one at issue here.

Doesn't this speak to the question you are raising:

"Adults who live together but do not marry - cohabitors - are more similar to singles than to married couples in terms of physical health and disability, emotional well-being and mental health, as well as assets and earnings.  Their children more closely resemble the children of single people than the children of married people."

And these:
"Married mothers have lower rates of depression than single or cohabiting mothers.
* Married women appear to have a lower risk of domestic violence than cohabiting or dating women. Even after controlling for race, age, and education, people who live together are still three times more likely to report violent arguments than married people.
"

It seems to me they are saying that a civil marriage certificate does make a difference.

As you why, I would speculate it's a matter of commitment or the lack thereof. The positive things they find associated with marriage are a result of a couple committed to one another and their children. The marriage certificate is simply a sign of that commitment. And the absence of a marriage certificate is usually a sign of a lack of commitment.
