To many people, marriage is inextrably linked to their religion. It is not just a civil ceremony, it is holy matrimony.

Exactly, and they cannot separate the two enough to recognize what seems obvious to me--that civil marriage as currently practiced does not effectively support holy matrimony. They argue the issue as though the two were still in sync and assume a challenge to current civil marriage practices is a challenge to holy matrimony, but it need not be, rather, it can solidify holy matrimony. This visceral reaction makes it difficult to deal with the issue because it engages the limbic brain rather than the analytical brain.
