Actually, you've done the misreading, there are two accounts of creation in the bible.

While Genesis 1:27 suggests that man and woman were created simultaneously -- "in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them" -- 2:78 speaks of God fashioning Adam alone, from the earth. Eventually God concludes, "It is not good for man to be alone" (2:18) and does His thing with the rib.

There are other differences as well: Genesis 2:7 records that God created man first, and then animals (2:19), the revese of what is described in Genesis 1:20-28.
