No, I don't think the "worthless piece of paper" argument holds up.

CB, I think you've made my point for me. You've been talking about the downfall of civilization, yet when I mention "worthless piece of paper," you come back with legal and financial bennies. That's all civil marriage is, a bunch of bennies. It is totally worthless in stemming the tide of barbarism as illustrated by your reference to monkey sex. Worthless.

That would be a nightmare for insurance companies and corporate human resources departments.

I would want to see some numbers before declaring that a nightmare, particularly since companies have started offering benefits to partners.

But even if there were a cost, look at what we're discussing. Allowing pairs other than a man and a woman to form families is either the right thing to do under the Constitution or it isn't. If it isn't, then the cost of health insurance is moot. If it is the right thing to do, then we find a way to deal with the insurance costs.

If this issue is about civilization vs. barbarism, then we need to analyze that and the role civil marriage plays in it. If it's about bennies, then we need to analyze that, why some people in our society get bennies and others don't. They're really two different things and mixing them doesn't increase clarity.
