There are many many reasons why it is our concern- but I'll give you one huge one- terrorists are into the drug trade big time, using it as a way to finance their global adventures. There are many other reasons why it is our concern, but I'll let you chew on that one for a while.

You really ought to read The Immaculate Invasion- it will give you a nice background on Haiti. I'm certainly not going to tell you lone "humanitarian" missions are what the US should be doing- that's why Iraq is such a stupid mission in so many ways (now that it has been recast as a humanitarian mission- rather than a "They've gpt WMD and they're going to use them on us" mission).

Things are going as well as anyone could expect in Afghanistan. The Taliban which sheltered and depended on Al Qaeda is gone, any Al Qaeda left are in hiding, an elected national convention (loya jirga) elected a new President and is drafting a constitution. And in Afghanistan, NATO and the UN are working hand in hand with us for a change.

Re. the opium, it's been grown there for thousands of years and is probably never gonna be eliminated.
