That is true in some communities, although sometimes it is a condition of graduation, rather than strictly voluntary. When a school has a lot of parental involvement, things go much better. I used to raise money for musical programs at my sons high school, as well as chaperoning a great deal, and there were quite a few parents involved, although, of course, the brunt of the work was carried on by the faithful few. Students felt energized, I think, by the level of interest the parents showed, and by the extras we could bring to make the program work well, instead of perfunctorily.
