Strength through economy is the key. If you want to go looking for a real world example in modern times, you need only look at Gadaffi. 25 years of isolation and he yielded. Not a single American life lost.

On the contrary, there were studies and measures taken after those incidents took place. They were taken quietly which is how it should be done. Cannot possibly spend money to cover all possibilities. Some of the newer techniques used to safeguard the warships in the Gulf during Iraq invasion were developed during Clinton administration. They were done quietly because there was no need to show it off to the world, no need to spend too much money on it, and there was no need to fear mongering the public.

I read somewhere, within weeks of the 9/11 incident, that Germany's intelligence forwarded information on the cells operating in Germany. Those warnings went unheeded because our intellience never think too highly of German and European intelligence. Likewise with our field FBI agents whose notes and warnings of potential terrorist activities went unheeded and never pursued. Those activities took place in 2001.

The majority of Americans don't even realize that they are being terrorized by Bushwacko conglomerate's deft use of mass fear psychology to mesmerize the public in order to get approval for their own agenda.

The CIA trained and raised Saddam was on the brink of getting squeezed within a few months to a year. He was under enormous pressure from his own allies. But what would be the consequences of that? Definitely no total control of Iraqi oil by Bushwacko conglomerates. As I recall, the new Iraqi governing council was set up to take over the control of local enforcement and all government operations, EXCEPT THE OIL OPERATION.

Anne, you have lost your mind. first you back Dean and now you tell us "liberals" can't make tough decisions. Dean is much more liberal that Kerry. And Kerry is not just tougher than Dean he's tougher than Bush. Just watch. Don't try to pin the old "libeal" label on John. It won't fit. I have heard him criticize the "goo-goo eyed bleeding hearts" on the left. He's a tough moderate progressive, liberal only on the right things.
