The S. Daniel Abraham & Ira L. Rennert Torah Ethics Project
A Statement of Conscience
As Orthodox Jews, we reaffirm the centrality of living in accordance with the highest ethical standards, as reflected in our tradition. The Torah requires that we seek moral excellence in every realm. This includes our relationships with our fellow Jews as well as non-Jews. Derekh Eretz (principles of moral decency) must always accompany our striving for maximum Torah knowledge and ritual adherence. Our pursuit of excellence in either one ought never justify a weakened commitment to, or mediocrity in, the other. This concern is expressed in five interrelated areas.
1. The Individual Imperative
We urge initiatives and personal resolve to raise the level of moral behavior and integrity in our families, businesses, and professional lives, be it in our attitudes, in our choice of words, or in our actions. In addition, each of us ought to be constantly mindful of the imperative of Kiddush Hashem (behavior that adds luster to God's sacred name), so as to bring honor to Jews, to Torah, and, ultimately, to God.
2. The Institutional Obligation
Our educational institutions, on every level, must place renewed priority on teaching and reinforcing good character, i.e., ethical civic, social, and economic practice. In Jewish community life our commitment to ritual observance must be expressed with impeccable integrity and concern for harmonious relationships with all fellow Jews, whatever their level of such observance. Our organizations should choose as leaders, honorees, and role models, only those whose activities embody the Torah's ethical standards. We call upon synagogues, schools, and other organizations to promote such ethical values wherever possible.
