Desperate for a character issue, the NYTimes just can't let go. I certainly hope we get a similar look at Kerry's service records and medical files. I would like to know how he got out of Nam after serving a mere 33% of a combat tour and how he got out of the active Navy six months early.

Well, it was my impression that the Guard didn't have strict attendence requirements. You just had to rack up enough attendence during your service period to qualify for fulfillment. Someone please correct me if that's wrong. So it wouldn't be an issue if Bush didn't attend any drills in a six month period, but rather whether he fullfilled all his required time over the period he was in the Guard. This is starting to look like a Snipe hunt, IMO. Derek

Whether Mr. Bush actually performed his Guard service to the full is a different matter. It bears on presidential character because the president has continually rejected claims that there was anything amiss about his Guard performance during the Alabama period. I don't recall the NYT taking a character issue stand against Clinton's avoidance of the draft or a character issue stand regarding his dalliances with interns, then lying about it. Why would they treat two presidents so differently?
