poor folks could go to college and get deferments. Many of us did ( i believe state college then was $200/400 a year). others joined up not thinking about serving country but to see the world. others were tied up in trying to go to school, etc. many different characters all the way around. I do not remember anyone being able to buy themselves out of service in my neighborhood. I do remember a lot of the guys that were jocks not being qualified when they took their physical. g
i do not see any shame in serving or not serving. There was a draft going on. Some guys joined up right after high school, others went to college and some went to work and got married. It was so long ago.
