Group targets 'no dirty gold'

VANCOUVER -- Just in time for Valentine's Day, Oxfam America and a Washington-based environmental group are launching a "No Dirty Gold" campaign that aims to get consumers to think twice before they buy a gold ring or other trinket for their sweethearts.

The campaign, planned for a launch today, focuses on the environmental and human rights performance of gold producers and zeroes in on gold because of its familiarity to consumers, said Payal Sampat, campaign director of Mineral Policy Center.

"Gold has a direct consumer connection," Ms. Sampat said. "It's harder to think about copper, for example, than about something they wear and use every day."

Spokesmen for two major gold producers yesterday said they welcome any increased consumer interest in how gold gets to the market.

"We have no problem with people understanding how we produce gold and how we interact with communities in the areas we produce gold," said Doug Hock, spokesman for Denver-based Newmont Mining Corp., the world's biggest gold producer.

Joe Danni, vice-president of corporate relations with Vancouver-based Placer Dome Inc., said gold producers have become increasingly focused on community relations and sound environmental practices.

kidl, others. I'm starting to warm to ACA. They likely have a mine, in time at Otish.
