<About 4.7 million Americans want jobs but are not looking for work>, 5 million of 280 million is 1:50 or 2%. That's not a problem. A lot of them will be people with no great drive to work [they might have enough money to live on for some time, or be comfortable enough with family or friends reducing their money needs with free accommodation, or any number of other reasons].

There will always be people in transition. I've been in that category a few times in my life and those were the good times, with lots of personal freedom. No having to be up and getting ready for work at 5.30 am or getting home late from the office at 9pm [late-working Japanese get home from the office at more like 1 am].

While looking for work, one can read the paper and have a nice cup of tea until noon. Play golf, go to the beach with the children, attend school camps as a parent helper and generally enjoy life. "Looking for work" is so popular in New Zealand that we have about 10% of the population doing it. The pay rate is better here than in the USA where bludging on taxpayers is frowned on. Here it's a national sport and I think they might now have an electoral majority, which is unlikely to be good for the economy as they are not the brightest people on Earth and might vote to kill the goose which lays the golden egg [Jay, not that there's anything good about an egg made of gold, I hasten to add. I just can't imagine a CDMA egg; though I like a gold-coloured yolk].

<"They're watching soap operas and drinking beer. It's living hell," > Hahaha!! Drinking beer is hell. Well, they don't need to do that if it's so terrible. A lot of people drink beer and snowboard and play snooker and think they are having fun. They can do something more interesting than watch soap operas if they want to. Gloom, doom! Woe is us...

A lot of people think, "Wooohooo, a day off! I'm going to kick back, drink beer and watch tv". Some even call in sick so they can do more of it.
