The rightwing seems to be afraid of losing power, mainly for white Christian hetero men (of which I am one). That is what seems to be at the heart of it and it has various manifestations depending on the individual. They have some valid points but they also fear too much and label too much. I think it's been going on ever since the Civil War.

The problem is, you can't now put the genie back in the bottle. You cannot erase civil rights, ethnic group growth, integrated athletics, sexual freedom, sex itself and the ever-changing world.

It's natural to have prejudices and be defensive, but usually it's not realistic. For instance, when I visit my parents' church in Houston (also the Bushes home church) I notice that their famous choir is mostly gay men. For many, that choir is the only reason they go to church.
Another such irony is Strom Thurmond and his life-long relationship with his black maid.

Having said all this, expect a long and nasty presidential campaign with the right playing to those base fears and the center-left marching for progressive change. When cornered, the Bushies will use the same old type attacks which they pray will work one more time.
