We pundits have been wrong before

No kidding. Iowa. Kerry with 20% predicted and 37% actually was outside 10 standard deviations of error. :P

That's a pretty poor analysis. Voters in primaries don't really have time to analyze the candidate's positions and voting record. They vote based largely on pre-conceived notions, and Edwards, a southerner, is perceived as more moderate than Kerry from Massachusetts.

The author should have looked at how the people of NC perceive Edwards, and also listened more carefully to his speeches. The lack of support for him in NC invalidates the author's conclusions. Edwards' rhetoric is not moderate. In fact it's considerably more liberal than Kerry's -- like his theme of two Americas, the heavy taxation of non-earned income (something even the European socialists avoid), etc. He may make an OK VP, though I think Richardson would be better.

I think the one thing to bear in mind about the campaign at this moment is that while Kerry has been running against Bush, Bush hasn't been running against Kerry, he's just been using the advantages of an incumbent to look presidential and try to get his message out.

We have a fairly good idea what Kerry has to throw against Bush and how Bush is likely to hold up. The reverse is not true.
