Many American companies have packed up & moved to Mexico to take advantage of dirt cheap labor. Don't expect Kerry to address that problem. He cares even less than Bush Adm about free trade American job loss.

no, I just threw out the term Nafta because Lou Dobbs was on and Nafta is a hot button currently. At this moment in time, I honestly don't know what to make of Nafta myself. One of the cities in Mexico which is a stronghold for maquiadoras (Juarez) is now the murder capital of the world. I don't think that was the case pre-Nafta. The border cities are places of unspeakable poverty, these are certainly "unintended consequences" of Nafta. I don't know what I would do to fix Nafta actually.

Its just that whenever Nafta comes up, the fact that Clinton supported it seems to be mentioned, AS IF the fact that a democrat supported a free trade deal means that for the life of all free trade deals, all democrats have to fall in line and support them unilaterally. It is as if this Bush administration can't deal with change or any policy shift due to unforseem consequences.

If Clinton was president today would he change Nafta? I suspect so, I think some policies regarding treatment of people would be part and parcel of the deals, for one thing.

India and China is a whole different matter. That is not a free trade agreement issue anyway. As far as I know, somebody correct me, but the high tech companies going to india for workers are treating the indian staff well. The china factories owned by Walmart are NOT treating workers as they should be treated. So issues right there wrt how US companies are allowed to treat offshore workers. Next using offshore labor to skirt taxes needs to be addressed as well as executive compensation and a whole host of matters. This is india and china, different from Nafta.
