I have thought for years that the US Government should pay people not to write poetry.

ROFLMAO!

too bad that heiress of Lily or whoever just gave $100 million to Poetry magazine. their previous operating budget was under $1 million.

And art as well!

The commencement speaker at my graduation from Maryland Institute remarked that only 5% of us would still be doing anything related to art in 5 years. My sister said it was the most depressing commencement speech she'd ever heard. Meanwhile I was sitting there thinking, thank God. I was subjected to some of the most horrendous creations by my fellow students, loosely labeled as "art" over my four years of study. Things I'd pay good money never to have to see again.
