He was a fiery orator who was also a fine wit. After one particularly rousing stump speech, an excited member of the audience shouted out: "ADLAI, YOU'VE GOT THE VOTE OF EVERY THINKING AMERICAN!" To which Adlai retorted: "That's not good enough. We need a majority!"
