It's a nice theory... to bad there is little evidence that in the *Real World* politicians act that way!

(Mostly, they seem happy to deficit spend with abandon at all times --- in good economic times as well as in bad times --- devaluing the currency, planting the seeds for inflation, running the printing presses full-tilt, shoveling pork out to their supporters... because it helps them in their NEXT ELECTION, and they will be long out of office before the vultures come home to roost.)

Just look around the world for hundreds of examples of places and times when the leaders did what was expedient for the short-term (to boost their re-election prospects), while damaging their nation's future prospects for wealth and happiness.

I'd say that for every one example you can find where 'tax cuts forced fiscal prudence, and spending cuts'... you can find 99 examples where no such thing happened.)

As I said, it's a pretty theory.
