The correct wording is that they HAD their reasons.

I believe the train wreck and their rapidly emerging inflation problems now gives them incentive to try and throw the inflation Old Maid Card back on the US. Actually, a case can increasingly be made that the yuan is a dead currency much like the US. It will be a question of which is the most wrecked.
