Incredibly direct and damning piece from the Governor of Iowa on Bush fiscal policies. (isn't Iowa a swing state?)

Iowa Governor Calls Economy a 'Slow-Motion Crisis'

That is where President Bush has failed – not because we had tough times under his watch ... but because he has chosen policies that are so shortsighted, they took a challenging situation and made it a bad dire situation.

When George Bush took the oath of office, the economy was weakening – the inevitable result of a long boom. Still, he was dealt a strong hand. We were finishing the longest peacetime expansion ever – one that created 22 million new jobs. We had low unemployment. A high level of business investment. A boom that – whatever its excesses – was based on balanced budgets and on rising productivity and finally, after years, that led to rising wages.

Today we have gone from a five trillion dollar projected surplus over 10 years to a $5 trillion deficit. Who says so? The Committee on Economic Development. Goldman Sachs. The Concord Coalition. Conservative business leaders – all of whom have documented the most staggering fiscal deterioration in our nation’s history.

True, we have had unexpected needs. By the way – that’s why it was good to run a surplus in the first place. But the economic mess we are in now does not result from a lingering recession or terrorist attacks. It is the result of policies by this president and this administration that were deeply ideological, politically cynical, and deceptive.
