Hi Doug,

Thanks for asking. I have posted about Knoppix several times on SI but to my knowledge you are the very first person to have given it a try - thanks again.

For the reply I have just rebooted with Knoppix 3.4 and tried my 128 MB USB stick. After plugging into a USB port it was shown on the desktop as "hard disk partition [sda1]". By default it was mounted as read-only. With right-click on the icon it is possible to change the status to write access permission. Copying a file to the stick was no problem then.
