Respectfully, I disagree about how sophisticated the electorate happens to be.

I have a good friend who is the immediate past chair of our County Democratic Party organization. She went to Iowa just before the caucuses for two weeks in order to work for Howard Dean. She told me that she was astonished at the number of people who she called whom had been swayed by an attack ad that lied about Dean being in favor of ending Social Security and Medicare. She was non-plussed by how adamant the voters were that this TV lie was true. And she was both disappointed and angered that she could only rarely dissuade them from believing this lie.
