Hi Doug,

Why the USB memory key is defaulted as read-only is a mystery. Go figure.

Knoppix is set up as a polite tool. It assumes the user doesn't want his environment to be modified by Knoppix. Preservation of the existing state can be important for rescue jobs like you performed it.

Any more tips?

Regarding Knoppix? Here two more rescue-related ones. They refer to version 3.4.
- At the boot prompt type "memtest" for a memory test.
- One can add the Linux virus scanner F-Prot ( f-prot.com ) and scan the Windows partitions for viruses.
Knoppix 3.4 is a special edition added to the latest German IT magazine c't issue. It's not available online yet, I don't know if memtest and F-Prot are offered by earlier versions.
