I think to have a chance of winning the dem candidate will have to make it clear he is willing to take unilateral action against offending nations.

They would need to have someone as a Presidential Candidate that is believable for that POV. Kerry won't be. He, and the people who would make up his Cabinet team, think talking at the UN is the way to go. The people who would elect them think the same.

I agree with that. But the key there is defining "offending." There is plenty of room to assert a willingness to take on threats yet set a more rigorous standard of justification and more vetting.
